The costume (as Bill Scarrott remembered) consisted of a flowery/colourful shirt or a cut down ladies dress, ordinary (black) trousers and a trilby. The shirt was decorated with long rags about ¾ inch wide of various lengths (8 – 24 inches) and the ends of the ribbons were cut to give a splayed, ragged effect. OWNFJ had 4 on the front, 9 on the back and 3 on each sleeve. A belt often made of rag, was worn around the waist. To this 5 or 6 ribbons were also attached, also instruments (tambourine, whistle) as well as the stick. Bunches of bells were also attached on 2 of the shorter ribbons at the waist. Faces were blacked and sometimes hands as well and nails were varnished.
